Brazilian couple to stand trial for Kornos forest arson

A 26-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, both Brazilian nationals residing and working in Limassol, have been referred for trial before the Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court. The defendants face multiple serious charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, arson in a forest, attempted arson, and negligent and reckless acts, following a fire that occurred on the evening of Sunday, August 2, in the Kornos area.

According to police reports, the suspects purchased fireworks at a local kiosk and ignited three of them near the woods, triggering a blaze in the dry grass. A local couple witnessed the incident at approximately 7 p.m., intervened to extinguish the flames before they could spread to the forest, and photographed the suspects' vehicle. The defendants reportedly claimed they were using the fireworks for amusement. Following their arrest, the court denied their lawyers' objection to continued detention, ordering them to remain in custody until the trial, which is scheduled to commence on October 21.
