Maria Angela Holguin calls for direct dialogue and transparency in Cyprus settlement talks

United Nations personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin has formally requested that Nicos Christodoulides and Tufan Erhurman engage in direct and frequent communication. According to the envoy, progress on confidence-building measures is a prerequisite for convening a new 5+1 meeting, a roadmap that aligns with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's statements from July 29, 2026. The agenda remains focused on three core pillars: confidence-building measures, substantive negotiation, and established methodology.

Holguin has publicly criticized both leaders for a lack of transparency, stating that the rhetoric they present to their respective domestic audiences contradicts the progress discussed during private consultations. Despite public posturing, she noted that the two leaders have shown willingness to discuss critical chapters of the Cyprus problem, including governance, property rights, territory, security, and EU participation. The envoy emphasized that turning political discourse into tangible action requires genuine political will from both sides, warning that the failure to align public narratives with private efforts undermines the peace process.
