OPEK criticizes leadership for lack of progress in Cyprus talks

The Reflection Group for the Modernization of Our Society (OPEK) issued a statement in August 2026 criticizing President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman for failing to utilize the window of opportunity for progress in the Cyprus issue, following the recent visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

OPEK argues that Tufan Erhurman remains unprepared to take significant steps to resolve the deadlock. Simultaneously, the group accuses President Christodoulides of pursuing a zero-sum policy, specifically citing his reluctance to implement Confidence Building Measures, his stance on new crossing points, and his handling of EU-Turkey relations. The group asserts that the Greek Cypriot side's insistence on a specific interpretation of reciprocity and security concerns prevents progress, while also warning against the risks associated with discussions concerning 'new ideas' for a solution.

The organization credits the ongoing survival of diplomatic efforts solely to the persistence of the UN Secretary-General and his envoy, Maria Angela Holguin. OPEK warns that the current failure to act is causing an opportunity to be missed, urging the leadership to abandon exclusionary tactics in favor of a positive diplomatic agenda to facilitate the resumption of negotiations.
