Flood protection project in Larnaca ahead of schedule
Construction of a major flood protection project in the Kamares area of Larnaca is progressing ahead of schedule, according to the Larnaca Provincial Self-Government Organization (EOAL). Officials stated on August 12, 2026, that the project is expected to be completed before the initial July 2027 deadline. The initiative focuses on establishing critical infrastructure to manage flood flows from the Kalo Chorio river basin, directly safeguarding residential zones in the municipalities of Larnaca and Aradippou.
The project addresses a long-standing vulnerability identified following the catastrophic flooding on December 13, 2014, which resulted in extensive damage to homes and business premises. While the primary construction in Kamares nears completion, authorities are already initiating plans for a subsequent phase designed to protect the rapidly developing Vergina area, ensuring broader regional resilience against similar future weather events.
