Fatal attack on cargo ship Tihamah off the coast of Yemen

On Tuesday, the Tanzania-flagged and Egyptian-owned cargo ship Tihamah was struck by an attack while transiting near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, off the coast of Al Mokha, Yemen. The incident resulted in significant casualties, with Yemeni authorities confirming the deaths of four crew members and two local rescuers, while an additional ten people sustained injuries.

International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez condemned the violence, describing it as an indefensible attack on international shipping that continues to threaten global supply chains and the lives of seafarers. In response to the tragedy, Dominguez has issued a renewed warning to shipowners and operators, urging them to conduct thorough risk assessments before transiting through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. He further emphasized the urgent need to protect maritime workers and called for the immediate release of all seafarers currently held captive in the region due to piracy.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait remains a critical maritime chokepoint, serving as a vital artery for international trade and energy shipments. The IMO continues to monitor the situation, as the attack highlights the ongoing security challenges facing commercial vessels in these hazardous waters.
