Morocco increases security to prevent new mass border crossings into Ceuta

Moroccan authorities have implemented enhanced security measures to prevent a potential mass influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The move follows a surge of misinformation on social media, where anonymous posts falsely claimed that the border crossing between the Moroccan city of Fnideq and Ceuta would open on August 15, citing a Spanish holiday as the supposed reason.

This security mobilization comes in the wake of an unprecedented migration event in late July, when approximately 72,000 migrants illegally entered Ceuta over a period of just a few days. According to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, roughly 70,000 of these individuals were subsequently deported back to Morocco. Rachid el Khalfi, a spokesperson for the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior, confirmed that all necessary measures are in place to intercept anyone attempting illegal entry, labeling the social media activity as a deliberate misinformation campaign designed to incite unlawful mass migration attempts.
