Death of Moroccan footballer Faten Ben Omar El Azizi during border crossing

Last month, 26-year-old Moroccan footballer Faten Ben Omar El Azizi died while attempting to swim into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. In a tragic irony, her mother received confirmation that Faten’s visa for Spain had been approved on the very day the young woman perished. El Azizi was one of at least 141 individuals who lost their lives during a mass attempt to enter the North African territory, with many victims either drowning or being crushed at land borders.

Faten played for the Moghreb Atlético Tetuán club in northern Morocco and viewed football as a path to a better life. Despite her dedication to the sport, which included regular training sessions on the pitch and the beach, her professional career could not provide a sustainable livelihood. Most of the victims in the mass border crossing incident are believed to be under 35 years of age. Her coach described her as a passionate athlete who was committed to her development, highlighting the contrast between her athletic aspirations and the circumstances that led to her fatal journey.
