Multiple wildfires break out across Cyprus on August 15

On August 15, 2026, Cyprus experienced a series of wildfires across several regions. Significant incidents occurred in Alampra, Pseudas, Kato Moni, Kallepia, and Lysos. Firefighting forces, including the Forestry Department and the Fire Service, responded to these emergencies throughout the day. In Alampra, Pseudas, and Kato Moni, fires were contained within 20 to 30 minutes, with minimal damage reported to vegetation and crops. A larger, ongoing forest fire is currently being tackled near the village of Lysos, where ground forces and aerial support—including four or five aircraft—have been deployed.

Additionally, a separate structural fire occurred in a mixed-use building in Kato Paphos in the early hours of Saturday. Investigations concluded that the blaze, which damaged a restaurant mezzanine and forced the evacuation of residents, was caused by a short circuit in a refrigerator. No injuries were reported in any of the day's incidents. The Department of Forestry has declared a red alert for Sunday, August 16, due to the high risk of further wildfires and has warned the public that setting fires is a serious legal offense. Authorities are continuing to investigate the causes of the landscape fires while remaining on high alert.
