Wildfires reported across Cyprus regions

On August 13, 2026, Cyprus faced multiple wildfire incidents. The first fire broke out in the early morning between Orounta and Kato Moni in the Nicosia district, burning dry grass and wild vegetation. Firefighting crews from the Lakatamia and Peristerona stations, supported by the Department of Forests and the volunteer Atlas Fireteam, successfully brought the blaze under control and eventually put it out. While initial reports indicated flames were near residential areas, authorities confirmed the site was contained without further escalation.

Separately, a significant fire occurred at noon in the Agios Vatzeros area of Marathounta, Paphos. This blaze affected approximately 6 hectares of low wild vegetation and an agricultural plot with almond trees. A combined force of 39 personnel, including 23 from the Department of Forests and 16 from the Fire Service, responded with 14 fire engines and other heavy equipment. Aerial assets were also deployed to assist. The fire was brought under control by 13:50. Authorities are currently investigating the causes of the Paphos fire, while monitoring remains in place to ensure no further flare-ups occur.
