Ministry of Education installs drinking water coolers in public schools

The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth of Cyprus has initiated a phased program to install drinking water coolers in all public schools. Minister Athena Michaelidou announced the policy in response to a parliamentary inquiry by Larnaca MP Prodromos Alabritis, confirming that the project began during the 2025-2026 academic year.

The initiative is supported by an annual budget of €130,000, which provides for the equipment of 25 schools each year. The first tender has already been announced in collaboration with school boards, with installations expected to commence between September and October 2026. Preparations for a second tender to cover an additional 25 schools for the 2026-2027 academic year are currently underway.

School selection for the second phase will be determined through consultations with the presidents of local school boards to address the specific needs and infrastructure conditions of each institution. This program reflects a systematic effort to modernize school facilities and ensure consistent access to clean drinking water for students across the country.
