Spotify to introduce AI persona labels for virtual artists

Starting in mid-September 2026, Spotify will introduce an "AI Persona" badge on certain artist profiles. This new label is designed to inform listeners that an artist's identity may have been generated by artificial intelligence rather than representing a real person. The platform aims to provide greater transparency regarding the content consumed on its service.

The label will be displayed on banners, in the "About" section of profiles, and as a note in search results and playlist tracks. Crucially, artists flagged with this label will be excluded from personalized user recommendations unless the user already follows them. Spotify clarified that the badge pertains specifically to the public identity of the artist, rather than the tools used to create the music, acknowledging that AI is increasingly common in human-led music production. This decision follows feedback from users regarding the need for clearer identification of virtual artists.
