Migrant rescue operations increase off the coast of Crete

Between August 12 and 13, 2026, Greek authorities coordinated several search and rescue operations for migrants in the maritime area south of Crete. The Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center (EKSED) reported that a total of 327 individuals were rescued across multiple incidents near the port of Kali Limenes and Agia Galini. Initial operations on August 12 involved a Frontex drone identifying three separate vessels carrying 32, 69, and 46 migrants respectively, who were subsequently transported by Frontex and Hellenic Coast Guard vessels. Following this, two additional boats carrying 87 individuals were detected during the night of August 13.

The migrants were recovered from the sea after their vessels were tracked by Frontex aerial assets. While the initial groups were brought to the port of Kali Limenes, the later arrivals were transported to Agia Galini. These events underscore a continuing trend of migration flows originating from the North African coast toward Crete and the island of Gavdos. Authorities remain on high alert as the region experiences a significant increase in maritime arrivals, with rescue teams continuing to monitor the area for further activity.
