Cyprus police intensify traffic enforcement as road fatalities continue

Traffic safety in Cyprus remains a major concern as road fatalities for 2026 reached 25 following a recent accident involving a 22-year-old woman. Despite strict fines and increased police surveillance, authorities report 36,879 traffic violations in the first half of the year alone. During a European-wide speed control campaign held from August 3 to August 9, police issued nearly 2,000 citations, including 1,457 for speeding, 79 for driving under the influence of alcohol, and 166 for mobile phone use while driving.

In a move to improve road safety, police have implemented a new procedure since April 6, 2026, allowing officers to issue immediate driver’s license suspensions on the spot for serious offenses. Between April 6 and August 8, 2026, authorities revoked 171 licenses, 159 of which involved drivers under the influence of drugs, while 12 were related to alcohol impairment. This policy aims to remove dangerous drivers from the road quickly, bypassing prolonged judicial delays. The police maintain a zero-tolerance approach and continue to utilize a combination of mobile and fixed cameras alongside nationwide inspections to curb reckless driving.
