Sara Papadopoulou announces retirement from professional football

Sara Papadopoulou, a prominent figure in Cypriot women's football, has announced her retirement after a 22-year career. Starting her journey at Lefkothea Latsion before moving to Omonia Nicosia, she established herself as a key leader and captain. During her tenure at Omonia, she made 100 appearances and scored 15 goals, notably leading the team to a historic Cypriot Cup victory in the 2020-2021 season after a penalty shootout against Apollon Ladies.

Her distinguished career also included several personal accolades, such as being named to the PASP team of the season and receiving the Player of the Year award for the 2020-2021 period. Beyond her club achievements, she was a consistent presence for the Cyprus national team throughout her long tenure.

Following her retirement, Papadopoulou is scheduled to discuss her career, the evolution of women's football, and her future plans during an appearance on the Sports Show Podcast with Savvas Neokleous on Wednesday, August 26.
