Zelenskyy requests 5% of US Patriot interceptor stockpile

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has officially requested that the United States sell Ukraine at least 5% of its existing stockpile of Patriot interceptor missiles. In a recent interview with CNN, Zelenskyy highlighted that Ukraine currently possesses two-and-a-half times fewer interceptors than it had in 2025, while Russia has significantly ramped up its missile production and usage. The request comes as Kyiv faces near-weekly ballistic missile barrages, including a devastating strike on August 5 that killed 17 people and overwhelmed local defenses, which failed to intercept any of the 28 missiles fired.

The Ukrainian leader emphasized that acquiring 5% of the US reserves would be sufficient to help Ukraine survive the upcoming winter and protect civilian lives. He noted that obtaining 10% of the stockpile would theoretically allow Ukraine to defend against all current Russian ballistic missile attacks. Zelenskyy described himself as being engaged in constant, high-level diplomatic efforts to secure these munitions, noting that the situation is critical as Russian forces exploit depleted defensive supplies to target urban areas like Kyiv.
