Tax authorities investigate claims from Makarios Drousiotis' book State Mafia

Following the report by the Independent Authority Against Corruption regarding the book "State Mafia" by Makarios Drousiotis, authorities have launched a two-pronged investigation. A five-member team of independent criminal investigators is currently reviewing the Authority’s findings and associated evidence. Simultaneously, the Tax Commissioner has appointed a three-member committee to conduct thorough tax audits based on the material provided by the Authority, which includes a 3,000-word report.

The investigation focuses on former President Nicos Anastasiades, his family members, as well as associates and partners of his former law firm. Other individuals named in the Authority's report are also expected to be subject to scrutiny, with investigators focusing on money trails and financial transactions mentioned in the text. This development follows a legislative proposal passed by the House of Representatives, which mandates that the Anti-Corruption Authority transfers its investigative findings for further action.

The tax committee is scheduled to meet again in late August to finalize a structured plan for the upcoming audits. These actions represent a significant escalation in the official response to the allegations raised in Drousiotis’ publication, as state bodies move to verify potential financial irregularities and corruption.
