Akamas municipality launches pilot project to curb coastal erosion at Coral Bay

The Akamas municipality has initiated a tender for a pilot project aimed at mitigating coastal erosion at Coral Bay. The project involves the installation of 220 submerged concrete units on the seabed, positioned at a depth of approximately four meters and extending about 100 meters in length, located 115 to 130 meters from the shore. The tender process, which opened in August 2026, will conclude on September 18, 2026. The budget for the project is set at 280,000 euros, excluding VAT.

This initiative is part of the 'Eco-Beachtech' project, co-financed by the EU's Interreg Greece-Cyprus 2021-2027 program. The project represents a collaborative effort between the Akamas municipality, the University of the Aegean, and the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence at the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK). Beyond protecting the coastline from wave impact and slowing sand loss, the reef will serve scientific research purposes, with 20 of the units being 3D-printed by the Eratosthenes Centre to study marine life attraction. The artificial reef is also expected to create new habitats for marine biodiversity and potentially provide areas for recreational activities such as snorkeling and free diving.
