Cyprus plans smart tourism strategy with artificial intelligence

On Thursday, August 13, 2026, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Kostas Koumis, and the Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation and Technology, Demetris Skourides, held a meeting to discuss the integration of artificial intelligence into the tourism sector. The initiative aims to accelerate the digital transformation of Cyprus as a top-tier tourist destination by improving service quality and competitiveness.

The meeting featured a presentation of the "Smart Tourism 2032: The Cyprus Artificial Intelligence Strategy" plan. This framework is part of the ongoing public consultation for the National AI Strategy, which is scheduled to conclude on August 31, 2026. The strategy seeks to position the island as a "Living Lab" for innovation, focusing on three core pillars: smart tourism infrastructure, smart destination planning and management, and the empowerment of the digital traveler.

Special emphasis is placed on supporting small and medium-sized tourism enterprises by providing them with access to advanced digital tools and AI-driven applications. Officials highlighted that these developments are essential for modernizing the tourism product while preserving the quality of traditional Cypriot hospitality. The initiative represents a broader effort to determine how AI can be effectively applied across the national economy.
