Mari local authorities demand meeting over Turkish-Cypriot property disputes

Local authorities in the village of Mari, led by Community Leader Maria Georgiou, have requested an urgent meeting with the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees. The dispute concerns approximately 55 families of displaced persons who have occupied Turkish-Cypriot properties since 1975. The authorities are seeking a resolution regarding the legal status and management of these premises, which are currently at risk of falling into disrepair or being demolished.

The conflict centers on a state policy that allegedly requires displaced persons to surrender their Turkish-Cypriot properties in exchange for receiving land titles for homes built in the compensatory area of Zygi. Furthermore, heirs of 10 elderly individuals who were provided housing in Zygi in 2010 are currently facing eviction, despite initial assurances that they would receive formal property titles. Maria Georgiou has warned that these policies threaten to destroy the community's heritage.

Legislators have been formally notified of the situation via letter. The community leadership is now awaiting a response from the Parliamentary Committee to discuss the potential impact of these evictions and property policies on the displaced residents.
