Health Minister Charalambides pushes for reforms in nursing and university clinics

Cyprus Minister of Health Neofytos Charalambides has announced his firm intention to move forward with the institutionalization of university clinics and necessary adjustments to address the ongoing shortage of nursing staff. In a statement on August 14, 2026, the Minister emphasized that while the government remains open to dialogue with labor unions, it will not tolerate further delays on these critical long-standing issues that directly impede the healthcare system's efficiency.

The legislative bills concerning university clinics and three specific amendments for nursing staff are scheduled for discussion in the upcoming sessions of the Parliamentary Health Committee. Furthermore, the Minister has initiated a review of the General Healthcare System (GeSY) rules and procedures to eliminate distortions that cause patient inconvenience. Efforts will also focus on addressing gaps in long-term care, home care for the elderly, and services for chronically ill or bedridden patients, signaling a broader intent to streamline healthcare delivery.
