Cyprus commemorates 52 years since the second phase of the Turkish invasion

August 14, 2026, marks 52 years since the second phase of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, a military operation that followed the July 15 coup and the failure of diplomatic negotiations in Geneva. This phase completed the occupation of territory on the island, a situation that continues to this day.

Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos commemorated the anniversary with a statement condemning the ongoing occupation as a crime that cannot be forgotten or forgiven. He highlighted the displacement of thousands, the loss of life, and the memory of missing persons, specifically naming the cities of Famagusta and Morphou as symbols of the unresolved issue.
