Thirtieth anniversary of the murder of Solomos Solomou

August 14, 2026, marks the 30th anniversary of the killing of 26-year-old Solomos Solomou in the Deryneia buffer zone in Cyprus. The incident occurred on August 14, 1996, while mourners were gathered to pay respects at the site where Solomou's cousin, Tasos Isaac, had been beaten to death by Turkish Cypriots and members of the Grey Wolves just three days earlier during a motorcycle protest.

During the commemorative gathering, Solomou crossed into the forbidden area and attempted to climb a flagpole to remove the Turkish flag. Despite warnings from UN peacekeepers and Turkish soldiers, he persisted until he was shot three times. The murder was captured on video and remains a significant event in Cypriot history. International arrest warrants were issued for individuals involved, including Kenan Akin, a former official in the self-proclaimed northern state who reportedly admitted in 2004 to shooting Solomou. Three decades later, the pursuit of justice remains a central theme for the families and the public, as those responsible have yet to be held fully accountable for the deaths of both men.
