Jared Kushner leads diplomatic efforts to revive Gaza peace plan
Jared Kushner, son-in-law and senior advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump, is currently engaged in intensive diplomatic efforts to revive a peace roadmap for the Gaza Strip. Following meetings in El Alamein, Egypt, with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Hamas leadership—including political chief Khalil al-Hayya—Kushner is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The primary objective is to salvage the U.S.-led 'Board of Peace' proposal, which aims for the disarmament of Hamas and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the enclave.
The initiative faces significant hurdles, as Netanyahu publicly rejected the 15-point roadmap on August 9, demanding a 'genuine' disarmament of Hamas before any troop withdrawal. Conversely, Hamas has indicated its willingness to accept the plan, provided that international mediators compel Israel to adhere to the agreed-upon terms. Meanwhile, eight regional nations have issued a joint statement condemning Israel's refusal to proceed with the roadmap, arguing that such obstruction undermines collective efforts to achieve lasting peace.
Looking forward, Kushner and Board of Peace envoy Nickolay Mladenov seek to translate the roadmap’s commitments into concrete, verifiable steps. Reports suggest that these measures may include establishing a new governance structure for Gaza that excludes Hamas, as the international community attempts to address both security concerns and humanitarian stability in the region ahead of Israel's October 27 parliamentary elections.
