Elderly woman and grandson left homeless in Limassol

AKEL Member of Parliament Argentoula Ioannou has reported a distressing case in Limassol, where an elderly woman and her grandson have been living in dire conditions for several months. After being evicted from their home by a banking institution, the pair was forced to relocate to a field, residing in a two-story shipping container that lacks basic utilities such as running water and electricity.

According to Ioannou, who visited the site, the container contains no furniture, forcing the individuals to sleep in their car. The MP claims that despite notifying the relevant social services of the situation on August 7, 2026, no intervention has been made as of August 14, 2026. Ioannou has publicly criticized the Ministry of Social Welfare for its perceived inaction and failure to provide support to these vulnerable citizens.

The incident has sparked a broader debate regarding housing policies in Cyprus and the effectiveness of the social safety net in protecting those facing property foreclosure. Ioannou has challenged the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare to visit the site personally to witness the living conditions. As of mid-August, the status of the pair remains unchanged while they wait for state assistance.
