Cyprus public health services prepared for high-heat weekend emergency surge

Public hospitals and the State Health Services Organisation (Okypy) in Cyprus have announced they are fully prepared to handle an increase in emergency cases during the Assumption of the Virgin Mary long weekend. Spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou confirmed that emergency departments and ambulance services are staffed with all necessary personnel to address potential health crises as thousands of residents travel to coastal resorts.

Health officials report a rise in incidents related to extreme temperatures, including cases of heatstroke, heat exhaustion, and sunburn, primarily affecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and individuals with chronic respiratory or cardiac conditions. Most patients presenting with heat-related exhaustion are treated on-site at emergency units without requiring further hospitalization.

In addition to temperature-related illnesses, Okypy remains on high alert for traffic-related accidents, which tend to increase during summer months due to heavy road traffic. Officials emphasize that while accidents are a year-round concern, the current period requires heightened vigilance. The healthcare system continues to monitor daily admission data to ensure that staffing levels remain sufficient to manage all medical emergencies, including strokes and heart attacks, throughout the holiday period.
