Cyprus Department of Forests issues red alert for August 15 holiday

The Cyprus Department of Forests has declared a red alert for forest fires ahead of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary holiday on August 15. The measure comes as authorities anticipate high public attendance in rural areas and forests, urging citizens to exercise maximum caution to prevent accidental blazes.

Key safety guidelines issued by the department strictly prohibit the lighting of fires outside of designated barbecue areas in authorized picnic sites. Authorities have advised against using firewood and demand that charcoal be fully extinguished after use. Furthermore, the use of machinery or tools capable of producing sparks, such as those for metal welding or cutting, is strictly forbidden without written permission until September 30. Owners of holiday homes are also reminded that burning yard debris, such as grass or branches, is prohibited.

Public cooperation with the police and forestry personnel is essential during this period. In the event of observing smoke or fire, citizens are instructed to immediately contact the forestry department at 1407 or the fire service at 112. This alert serves as a preventative measure following the historical trend of increased fire risks during the summer holiday season.
