Unsettled weather brings rain and storms to Cyprus mountains

On August 14, 2026, mountainous regions of Cyprus experienced rainfall and thunderstorms, a weather phenomenon described by meteorologists as uncharacteristic for mid-August. Seasonal low pressure and an unstable air mass have contributed to this pattern, with local residents sharing video footage of the intense conditions across social media platforms, specifically from the Limassol district.

According to Panagiotis Mouskos of the Department of Meteorology, these phenomena are localized but potentially high-intensity, with a possibility of hail occurring during storms. While many inland areas remained hot, cloud development triggered isolated rain and storms in mountainous areas and parts of the interior. Wind speeds were recorded at three to four Beaufort, reaching up to five in some coastal areas, while temperatures remained near seasonal averages.

The weather pattern is expected to persist through August 15 and 16, continuing to affect the mountains and interior. Authorities advise that while most of the island will remain clear, citizens should remain cautious of sudden localized storms and potential hail as the seasonal low pressure continues to influence the region.
