Unstable weather conditions impact Cyprus on the Feast of the Assumption

Cyprus experienced unseasonable weather on August 14 and 15, 2026, as seasonal low pressure and unstable air masses caused rain, storms, and potential hail across the island. The phenomena were most intense in the mountainous regions, including Kyperounta, Spilia, and Platania, as well as parts of the interior and eastern districts. The sudden change in weather, particularly during the Feast of the Assumption, disrupted outdoor celebrations and forced bathers to leave coastal areas, such as in Limassol.

According to the Meteorological Department, the weather featured winds blowing at 3 to 4 Beaufort, rising locally to 5 Beaufort near the coast, with temperatures reaching up to 37°C in inland areas. Despite the showers and storms, high temperatures remained within seasonal norms. Residents captured the events on social media, showing significant rainfall in communities that are typically dry during mid-August. No major damage was reported, and the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy with localized phenomena as the unstable air mass continues to affect the region.
