Local authorities in Cyprus reject government plans for youth residential facilities

Tensions between the Cypriot government and local municipalities have escalated following a July 30 letter from the Ministry of Interior. The Ministry requested that the municipalities of Larnaca, Latsia-Geri, Amathounta, and the community of Moni reconsider their opposition to the establishment of new residential facilities for children and adolescents. Despite government overtures, including potential meetings with social welfare officials to discuss these plans, local authorities remain steadfast in their refusal to host such structures.

The municipal district of Yermasoyia held an emergency meeting on Wednesday, where council members unanimously reaffirmed their rejection of the proposals. This follows a similar stance from the Latsia-Geri municipality, which has formally demanded written assurances that the plans will be abandoned. The mayor of Amathounta, Kyriakos Xydias, stated that this is the third time the government has pursued this matter; he noted that the Amathounta municipal council is scheduled to meet on September 3 to formally confirm its negative position on the development.

Local officials have expressed dissatisfaction with the government's persistence, with the deputy mayor of Yermasoyia, Christos Papamichael, warning of potential reactions if the state continues to ignore the stance of local authorities.
