Turkish Cypriot leader criticizes European Parliament during commemoration events

On August 14 and 15, 2026, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman attended memorial ceremonies in Maratha, Sandalari, Aloa, and Vouno to honor Turkish Cypriots killed in August 1974. During these events, Erhurman emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot community would continue to defend its security, equality, and rights, noting that past events must be considered when evaluating current security concerns. Prime Minister Unal Ustel also issued a message highlighting the mixture of heroism, resistance, and pain associated with these dates, reaffirming the community's path with support from Turkey.

Erhurman used these platforms to strongly criticize the European Parliament for its decision last October to establish a memorial for victims of the 1974 Turkish invasion. He described the move as a "scandalous" example of double standards, arguing that it ignores Turkish Cypriot missing persons and presents a biased, incomplete narrative of the Cyprus conflict. He asserted that the community would not remain silent regarding the perceived disregard for their suffering. Regarding the ongoing efforts to locate missing individuals, Erhurman referenced the continued work of the Committee on Missing Persons, which seeks to clarify the fates of those lost during the conflict.
