Turkish Cypriot leadership commemorates the 1974 massacres in Maratha, Santalaris and Aloa

On August 14, 2026, commemorative ceremonies were held in the villages of Maratha, Santalaris, and Aloa to honor the victims of the events that took place in 1974. The events included wreath-laying ceremonies and moments of silence to remember those who died during the period of conflict.

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman attended the ceremonies and addressed the community, stating that the current security concerns of Turkish Cypriots must be viewed through the lens of historical events. He reaffirmed the commitment to protecting the community's rights, security, and equality on the island. Meanwhile, 'prime minister' Unal Ustel issued a message describing August 14 as a day reflecting both resistance and deep pain, while emphasizing the continued support provided by Turkey to the community in their ongoing political path.

The leadership underscored that the Turkish Cypriot side remains dedicated to preserving the memory of the 1974 events and will continue to advocate for its cause on all international platforms.
