Cypriot police implement increased traffic measures for Assumption Day holiday

Cypriot authorities implemented enhanced traffic policing measures across the island during the August 15th Assumption Day holiday weekend. Traffic Safety Officer Giorgos Milis announced that police patrols were increased on major highways and secondary roads leading to coastal and mountain resorts to facilitate the mass movement of travelers. Authorities specifically targeted violations such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, excessive speeding, and the failure to use safety equipment.

By midday on August 15, heavy congestion was reported on the routes from Nicosia to Troodos, specifically near the Akaki, Peristerona, and Astromeritis areas, and on the Limassol-Troodos road near Lania and Trimiklini. To manage the high volume of traffic, police advised drivers to remain patient, maintain safety distances, and utilize alternative routes such as the Kantu-Omodos-Mandria or Agia Phyla-Apesia-Kapileio-Trimiklini roads. The Department of Forests also reported high occupancy rates at various picnic sites, with locations like Trooditissa and Mavralis reaching full capacity by 12:30 p.m. Police remain on alert to assist the public and prevent road collisions, while also cautioning citizens about the high risk of forest fires in outdoor areas.
