Cypriot police implement traffic measures for the Assumption Day long weekend

Cypriot police have implemented heightened safety and traffic control measures across the road network from August 14 to August 16 to manage the surge in travelers during the Assumption Day (Dekapentaugoustos) long weekend. Authorities are focusing on major arterial routes, highways, and paths leading to coastal resorts and mountain areas like Troodos, where heavy traffic was reported on August 15, specifically near Akaki, Peristerona, Astromeritis, Lania, and Trimiklini.

Officials, including Traffic Department representative Tasos Asiikkis and Road Safety officer Giorgos Milis, stated that police patrols are conducting intensive enforcement against serious traffic violations, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding, seatbelt non-compliance, and the use of mobile phones. For the return trip, mass travel is expected on Sunday between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Beyond traffic management, police are providing alternative routes for drivers heading from Limassol to Troodos, specifically via Kantou-Omodos-Mandria or Agia Fyla-Apesia-Kapileio-Trimiklini. Citizens are urged to plan their trips in advance, follow traffic regulations, and remain cautious, as the holiday period also involves a high risk of forest fires in rural areas. Officers remain deployed across the country to assist with circulation and ensure public safety during these festivities.
