Cyprus police implement heightened traffic measures for mid-August holiday

Cypriot police have announced a series of heightened traffic safety measures covering the period from August 14 to August 16, 2026, in anticipation of heavy travel for the Mid-August holiday. Authorities are focusing on major highways and arterial roads leading to coastal and mountain resort areas, which historically experience significant congestion during this time. According to George Milis, the department's head of road safety, the police presence will include increased motorized patrols and traffic management to facilitate the movement of holidaymakers.

Officers are strictly enforcing regulations against dangerous driving, including speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the use of mobile phones while driving, and failure to use seatbelts or helmets. Mass departures from Nicosia were expected by the evening of August 14, with return traffic anticipated to be heaviest on Sunday, August 16, between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Police have advised drivers to plan their travel in advance and utilize alternative routes, specifically suggesting the Kantou-Omodos-Mandria and Agia Fyla-Apesia-Kapileio-Trimiklini roads for those traveling from Limassol toward Troodos.

While traffic remains generally fluid, the increased police presence will continue throughout the weekend to prevent collisions and assist with traffic flow. Authorities emphasize that these measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure public safety during the peak summer excursion period.
