Cyprus transmission operator rules out power cuts

The Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO) has confirmed that there is no risk of power cuts in the coming days, citing sufficient electricity supply to meet current demand. TSO spokesperson Hara Koussiappa announced on August 14 that current midday electricity demand is approximately 1,200 megawatts (MW), while nightly demand fluctuates between 950MW and 1,000MW. With an available production capacity exceeding 1,240MW, the grid remains stable, capable of managing potential unit failures without significant service disruption.

This positive outlook follows a challenging July for the national power grid, during which record energy demand coincided with multiple failures of conventional generating units, leading to localized supply issues. The current improvement in grid reliability is attributed to a reduction in overall demand. Furthermore, the TSO expects a continued decrease in electricity usage beginning August 15, as many residents depart for the holiday period. Authorities maintain that any technical disturbances resulting from a production unit loss would be brief, requiring only minutes for the system to rebalance.
