Deadly earthquake strikes Indonesia's Flores island

On the morning of August 15, 2026, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia, with its epicenter located 68 kilometers northwest of the city of Ende, Flores. The shallow tremor, occurring at a depth of 10 kilometers, triggered localized tsunami warnings, which were later lifted, and caused widespread destruction including building collapses and landslides. As of August 17, authorities have confirmed 68 deaths, with over 13,000 residents displaced from their homes due to structural damage and the psychological trauma caused by hundreds of aftershocks. The affected region, specifically the Nagekeo area, faced severe isolation as landslides rendered road networks impassable and severed communications.

Following the disaster, the Indonesian government declared a state of emergency for Flores island. Over 3,500 military and police personnel have been deployed to support search and rescue operations, while the Red Cross and Red Crescent are coordinating the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid, including food, water, and medical supplies. The tectonic activity has been linked to the "Flores Back-Arc Thrust" fault system, a high-risk zone within the Pacific Ring of Fire. Rescue efforts remain ongoing, though no additional missing persons have been officially reported at this stage.
