Escalating political tensions between Cyprus Presidential Palace and DISY

The political landscape in Cyprus is currently experiencing a period of intense instability following a public clash between President Nikos Christodoulides and the Democratic Rally (DISY). Although the traditional mid-August holiday period has provided a temporary lull in activity, the underlying conflict over dominance within the center-right camp remains unresolved.

The rift intensified last weekend after President Christodoulides used the term “DISAKEL” while speaking in Paralimni, a derogatory portmanteau suggesting an alliance between the opposition party DISY and the communist AKEL party. The President made these remarks while addressing criticism regarding his government's recent appointments to semi-governmental organizations, declaring that the “party is over” for political patronage. DISY reacted strongly to the comments, condemning the President for using a memorial service for Tassos Isaac and Solomos Solomou to make divisive political statements.

Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis has defended the President’s stance, arguing that the identical nature of recent criticisms issued by both DISY and AKEL necessitated the characterization. This struggle highlights a broader realignment within the center-right, involving key political figures such as Nikos Christodoulides, Annita Demetriou, and Averof Neofytou, all of whom are positioning themselves for influence ahead of the 2028 presidential elections.
