Celebration of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Paphos

On August 15, Cyprus observes the Dormition of the Theotokos, a major religious holiday often referred to as the "Summer Easter." In the Paphos district, this date remains deeply rooted in local traditions, characterized by church services and community gatherings known as panigiria.

Historically, these festivals served dual purposes, acting as both spiritual venues and vital marketplaces. Residents and visitors would attend religious ceremonies while simultaneously purchasing produce, legumes, fruits, and essential household goods such as tools and kitchenware.
