Heavy summer rains cause flooding and rescue operations across Nicosia
Unusually heavy rainfall struck Nicosia and mountainous areas of Cyprus between August 17 and August 18, 2026, leading to widespread disruption and emergency interventions. On Sunday evening, a collision involving two vehicles in Lakatamia resulted in a woman being trapped inside her car; firefighters successfully extricated the driver and transported her to Nicosia General Hospital. This incident occurred shortly before a series of intense storms swept through the capital, triggering 35 emergency calls by Monday morning.
Fire services, assisted by SUPPORT-CY volunteers, responded to numerous reports of flooded basements, trapped motorists, falling trees, and debris-blocked drainage systems across areas including Engomi, Makedonitissa, Strovolos, and Agios Dometios. Local authorities, including the Nicosia District Local Government Organisation, mobilized crews to clear storm drains and manage rising water levels. While no injuries were reported during the flooding, residents have expressed frustration over the inadequacy of existing anti-flooding infrastructure, which they claim has remained unimplemented for decades.
By Tuesday, weather conditions remained unstable with a yellow warning in effect for parts of the island, including mountainous regions like Spilia and Kakopetria. Police issued advisories urging motorists to drive at reduced speeds and maintain safe distances due to limited visibility and water accumulation on major roads. The Meteorological Department expects more stable, clearer conditions to return by Thursday, with a gradual increase in temperatures through the end of the week.
