Traffic incidents and severe weather disruptions across Nicosia and Limassol
Over the past few days, Cyprus has experienced a series of traffic accidents and significant infrastructure challenges due to extreme weather. On August 15, a vehicle crash on the Nicosia-Limassol motorway near Moni led to the temporary closure of the left lane. Two passengers were hospitalized as a precaution. Shortly after, on August 16 and 17, heavy rainfall affected the same motorway, particularly in the Kornos and Kofinou areas, resulting in reduced visibility and slippery road surfaces.
Separately, on the night of August 16, a two-car collision in Lakatamia, Nicosia district, required a fire service rescue operation. A female driver was extricated from her vehicle and transported to the Nicosia General Hospital for medical care. The severity of the weather intensified on August 17 and 18, with heavy downpours causing flooding in Engomi, Makedonitissa, Strovolos, Lakatamia, and Agios Dometios. The fire service responded to 35 incidents, involving water extraction from basements, clearing of storm drains, and rescuing trapped motorists. Volunteer group SUPPORT-CY assisted in these operations. While no injuries were reported from the flooding, the Meteorological Department issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms and hail, urging continued caution as local authorities continue clearing debris and addressing the damage.
