Cyprus cities named among top global retirement destinations by Forbes
Forbes has identified three Cypriot coastal cities—Limassol, Paphos, and Larnaca—as prime destinations for international retirees. The evaluation, which covered 96 locations across 24 countries, highlighted the island’s mild Mediterranean climate, political stability, safety, and the widespread use of the English language. According to the report, living costs in Cyprus are approximately one-third lower than the average in the United States, and permanent residents gain access to the national General Healthcare System (GeSY).
However, local commentary emphasizes that this ranking is specifically calibrated for US citizens with significant savings and retirement income, rather than reflecting the domestic standard of living. Experts note that while the island remains an attractive choice for foreigners, the economic experience of a local worker differs significantly from that of a wealthy expatriate. The report also cites the bilateral double-taxation agreement between Cyprus and the US as a strategic advantage for American retirees considering a permanent move to the island.
