Turkish military command shifts in occupied Cyprus

On August 15, 2026, the Turkish government announced significant changes to its military leadership stationed in occupied Cyprus. According to the Official Gazette of Turkey, signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Lieutenant General Ertan Inaltekin has been appointed commander of the Turkish forces in Cyprus, replacing outgoing Lieutenant General Sebahattin Kilinc, who will now serve under the Turkish General Staff.

Simultaneously, Major General Sukru Bilir has been named the new head of the security forces in the occupied areas, succeeding Major General Ilker Gorgulu, who has been reassigned to the 28th Mechanized Infantry Division. These appointments are part of a broader structural reorganization involving 205 generals and admirals across the Turkish land, naval, and air forces.

The reshuffle follows routine personnel adjustments within the Turkish military apparatus. While these appointments reflect standard operational rotations within the Turkish Armed Forces, they signal a continued maintenance of the current military presence and operational structure in the region.
