Jet ski accident in Protaras leaves two in serious condition

On the afternoon of August 15, 2026, a serious maritime accident occurred off the coast of Pernera in Protaras, Cyprus. A jet ski, operated by a 17-year-old girl with an 18-year-old passenger, collided with a towed inflatable sofa carrying five individuals, including a 48-year-old man and three children aged 7, 11, and 13. All individuals involved are Greek Cypriots.

The collision resulted in severe injuries for the 48-year-old man, who sustained pelvic fractures, and his 7-year-old daughter, who suffered a skull fracture. The child is currently in stable condition at Makarios Hospital in Nicosia. The father's condition deteriorated on Sunday, leading to his emergency transfer to Nicosia General Hospital, where he remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit. The two other children involved were examined and discharged.

Authorities, including the Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department and the Paralimni Police Station, are investigating the incident. The probe focuses on how the 17-year-old obtained the vessel, given that local law requires operators to be at least 18 or hold a learner's permit with adult supervision. Officials from the Deputy Ministry of Shipping are examining the rental process to determine potential liability.
