Cypriot athletes compete at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham
On August 15, 2026, Cypriot athletes Philippa Fotopoulou and Elena Kulichenko competed in the 27th European Athletics Championships held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. The day was significant for the Cypriot team, as both athletes aimed for success in their respective events during the sixth day of the competition.
Philippa Fotopoulou participated in the long jump preliminaries. Despite recording a strong jump of 6.60 meters, she finished in 13th place overall, narrowly missing a spot in the final by a single point. She remains the first alternate for the final. In the evening, Elena Kulichenko competed in the high jump final, where she successfully cleared 1.88 meters. After three unsuccessful attempts at 1.92 meters, she secured 10th place in the final standings.
These performances followed earlier efforts by other Cypriot athletes at the championships, including Milan Trajkovic, who placed 8th, and Iosif Kesidis, who finished 12th. The competition in Birmingham continues as athletes from across Europe contend for honors in various track and field disciplines.
