Large wildfire breaks out in Lysos, Paphos district

A large wildfire broke out shortly before 16:00 on August 15, 2026, in the area of Lysos, near Prophet Elias in the Paphos district. The blaze has prompted the activation of the 'Ikaros II' emergency plan due to the severity of the situation and the proximity of the community to the active fire front. While most sections of the fire have been brought under control, one significant front remains active in a ravine, presenting a challenge for ground crews.

The firefighting operation is being led by the Director of the Department of Forests, Savvas Iezekiel. Efforts are currently hampered by rugged terrain, dense vegetation, and strong winds. The aerial response includes eight aircraft—four helicopters and four airplanes—plus a command helicopter, while ground forces consist of 29 vehicles from the Department of Forests, 10 fire trucks from the Fire Service, and multiple water tankers and bulldozers used to create firebreaks. Authorities have initiated precautionary evacuation procedures for the nearby community as a safety measure. Emergency crews remain on high alert, working to fully contain the remaining active fire front and monitor the perimeter to prevent further flare-ups.
