Diplomatic row erupts over captured Iranian pilots in Qatar

A diplomatic dispute has emerged between Iran and Qatar regarding the fate of several Iranian pilots. On August 15, General Mohammad Bagerzadeh, head of the Iranian Committee for the Search for Missing Armed Forces Personnel, claimed that three pilots—Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian, and Omran Behravashian—were captured alive by Qatari forces following the crash of their Su-24 aircraft on March 2. Iran has appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene and facilitate their release, alleging that the detainees have been denied contact with their families.

Qatari authorities have categorically denied these claims, labeling them as misleading. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed Al-Ansari, stated that the pilots breached Qatari airspace and failed to respond to communication attempts before their aircraft crashed. According to Doha, search teams recovered only one body, which was previously coordinated for return to Iran. While Iran persists in demanding access to the alleged survivors, Qatar maintains that no such prisoners are held and has invited Iranian authorities to discuss operational details, an invitation Tehran has yet to fulfill.
