Mother drowns at Larnaca beach while rescuing two children
A tragic drowning incident occurred on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the CTO beach in Larnaca, resulting in the death of a European tourist mother. The woman entered the sea with two of her children, aged 12 and 13, around 6:30 p.m. while the area was experiencing turbulent water conditions. Other beachgoers noticed the family in distress and rushed into the water to rescue them, pulling all three to the shore.
Despite immediate efforts to resuscitate the woman, she was pronounced dead. Her two daughters were transported to the Larnaca General Hospital, and one of them was subsequently transferred to the Makarios Hospital in Nicosia due to her serious condition. Reports indicate the incident occurred shortly after the local lifeguard service had finished its daily shift. The family, a group of five, was at the beach with the father and a third child who remained on the shore. The Larnaca Police Division, led by the district police director, has launched an ongoing investigation into the specific circumstances of the tragedy.
