Severe storms hit Mani region causing flooding and injuries

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, severe summer thunderstorms struck the Mani peninsula in Greece, causing significant flooding and infrastructural damage. Heavy rainfall turned local streets into rushing torrents in areas including Alypa, Kokkala, Oitylo, Neo Oitylo, and Exo Nymfio. Properties and tourist accommodations were inundated as water levels reached windows, and a 20-meter section of road was completely destroyed in Alypa.

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis confirmed that one woman was seriously injured after being struck by lightning while inside her vehicle in Oitylo. The victim was transported to the hospital in Sparta by EKAB emergency services. Local authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage to homes and public infrastructure, while residents and visitors continue to deal with the aftermath of the severe weather event.
