Delays reported for new Ypsonas Gymnasium project in Cyprus

Cyprus Minister of Education Athena Michaelidou announced that a site for the proposed new Gymnasium in Ypsonas has yet to be identified, delaying the project's progress. In a parliamentary response dated August 5 to MP Michalis Kounounnis, the Minister clarified that while a preliminary project note has been prepared and is currently under review, the formal submission to the General Directorate of Development cannot proceed without a designated location. The Ministry of Education is currently awaiting a response from the Department of Town Planning and Housing regarding potential sites.

Regarding the demand for a new Lyceum in the area, the Minister stated that the need for such a facility has not yet been formally assessed. This update comes following concerns raised by an ad hoc committee representing parents from public schools in Ypsonas and Kouriou, who cited issues with housing needs and infrastructure safety. In addition to addressing capacity concerns, the Ministry is currently implementing safety measures for school facilities ahead of the new academic year. The project for the new Gymnasium is not currently included in the active construction budget, pending further administrative site selection.
