Status of new school infrastructure projects in Ypsonas

The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth has provided an update regarding the proposed construction of a new gymnasium and lyceum in Ypsonas. In a response dated August 5 to Limassol Member of Parliament Michalis Kounounnis, Minister Athena Michaelidou stated that the new gymnasium project is currently undergoing preliminary study but cannot proceed to the General Directorate for Development until a suitable construction site is identified. The Ministry is awaiting a response from the Department of Town Planning and Housing regarding potential locations, and the project is not currently included in the 2027-2029 Medium-Term Fiscal Framework.

The update comes after an ad hoc coordinating committee of parents' associations from Ypsonas and Kourion expressed concerns regarding educational housing needs and school safety. While the gymnasium project is in a study phase, plans for a new lyceum are in an even more preliminary stage, with the Ministry currently evaluating the necessity of the project. Officials emphasize that finding land remains the primary obstacle for moving forward with the gymnasium, while the lyceum remains an unassessed requirement at this time.
